Private eye treatment: punctal cautery/plug occlusion

Private eye treatment: punctal cautery/plug occlusion

Minimal waiting times and high-quality care at your fingertips with care at Midland Eye Clinic

Dry eye is the name for a group of conditions that are all related to problems with the tears you are producing. Symptoms can include:

  • Watery eyes – the tears that you make don't stick to the surface of the eye as well as they should and so your eye gets dry.
  • Feelings of dryness, grittiness, or soreness, in one or both eyes, which may get worse during the day as the eye is not getting enough moisture.
  • Redness of your eyes.
  • Blurred vision – especially when using a computer, reading and/or watching TV.
  • Your eyelids stick together or to the surface of your eyes – especially first thing in the morning.

Dry eye syndrome is often a part of the natural ageing process, but can be caused by problems with the eyelids, such as blepharitis, or as a side effect of some prescription drugs.

Tear substitutes such as drops, gels and ointments are often used to treat dry eyes. However if your dry eyes fail to respond to other forms of treatment, surgery may be an option. One surgical technique, known as insertion of canalicular or punctal plugs which plug up the tear ducts allowing tears to collect and lubricate the eye.
