Reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses with astigmatic keratotomy eye surgery

Minimal waiting times and high-quality care at your fingertips with care at Midland Eye Clinic

What is astigmatism?
Ideally, your eye should be shaped like a perfectly round ball. Light can then enter your eye and bend evenly, which gives you a clear view. If you have a common condition called astigmatism, your eye is not completely round. Your cornea, which is the window at the front of your eye, has an irregular curve. Light gets bent more in one direction than another and only part of an object is in focus. This can cause: blurred or distorted eyesight, headaches, eye strain.

Astigmatic keratotomy eye surgery
You may be born with astigmatism and it often occurs with short-sightedness or long-sightedness. Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. In some cases, astigmatic keratotomy eye surgery may be recommended. This is a procedure to reshape the cornea from an oval into a rounder shape. Numbing anaesthetic drops are put in your eye, so that you do not feel any pain. The procedure takes about 20 minutes. It may be carried out at the same time as another type of eye surgery. Your surgeon makes one or two small cuts at the steepest (most sharply angled) part of the cornea. This makes the cornea relax and become a more rounded shape. Finally, antibiotic drops are put in your eye to prevent an infection. If the procedure is successful, you may not need to wear glasses or contact lenses again or thinner lenses may be sufficient.
