National Eye Health Week 2022

National Eye Health Week takes place from 19 to 25 September 2022, promoting the importance of good eye health and the need for regular eye tests for all.

According to research from Eye Health UK and the Thomas Pocklington Trust, 77 per cent of us have suffered poor eye health in the last 12 months. Not only that, but it is estimated 2 million people in the UK are living with sight loss, that is severe enough to have a significant impact on their daily lives. Research suggest that up to half of this sight loss is avoidable.

David Cartwright, chair of Eye Health UK, the charity responsible for organising the National Eye Health Week, says

“There’s perhaps never been a more important time for people to focus on their eye health. With ophthalmology the number one reason for hospital outpatient visits in England, and the heavy toll the pandemic has taken on the nation’s eyes, we need optics to come together to educate the public to prevent a future tsunami of avoidable sight loss and poor eye health.”

National Eye Health Week is an opportunity for being more ‘Eye Aware’, paying attention to our current eye health, as well as following some advice and tips to help keep our eyes healthy for the longer term.

Midland Eye’s very own Professor Sunil Shah says,

First things first, it’s important to know the danger signs when it comes to your eyes. Seek urgent advice if you experience any sudden loss or reduction of vision, eye pain or injury, distortion of images or extreme sensitivity to light. Emergency eye care is available both in the community via local optometrists or hospital A&E departments, and you shouldn’t take any chances when it comes to your eye health. have created some downloadable resources that provide top tips for Eye Health.
